All good questions that patients often ask a dentist. A gummy smile refers to a person's smile that shows too much gum tissue in proportion to the teeth. A gummy smile sometimes occurs as the teeth are developing and eruting; while other times the gum tissue can grow further on to the teeth and cover a larger surface of the teeth. Overgrowth of the gum tissue is termed Gingival Hyperplasia, and it can be the result of side effect of certain medications, poor oral hygiene, or irritation due to external factors such as braces. Overgrown gum tissue covers an excessive part of the coronal part of the tooth structure which results in an unpleasant smile. In addition, patients with gingival hyperplasia experience more food and plaque impaction around their teeth, making them more susceptible to cavities.

The photographs and videos illustrate an example of a patient who completed orthodontic treatment with braces for two years. The gum tissue became irritated during the treatment because of the orthodontic brackets and lack of proper oral hygiene. The irritation of the gum tissue gradually led to gingival hyperplasia. The patient stated her teeth looked too short and she was concerned about showing too much gum tissue when smiling. At the consultation visit, we discussed correcting her gummy smile with a Gingivectomy procedure, wherein the excess gum tissue would be removed using an electrosurge machine. On the following visit, the treatment was completed under local anesthesia by our expert dentist using techniques that ensure the comfort of the patient. We achieved excellent results and a beautiful smile for our patient 😁. After a week of healing, the patient was ready to show off her beautiful smile to the camera.
